Dr. Banno shared information about a new technique that he has learned over the last six months that offers a permanent solution to erectile dysfunction. Erectile Dysfunction is the inability to obtain or maintain an erection suitable for satisfactory sexual activity. One in ten men over the age of 30 have ED which accounts for 40 million men affected. Ninety percent of ED is physical and 10 percent is psychological. Dr. Banno suggested that all treatments for prostate cancer can cause ED, but if a man had the ability to obtain an erection before treatment, he should be able to after treatment. ED can be an early warning sign for cardiovascular disease and may precede a heart problem by three to five years because the inside lining of the arteries become abnormal and plaque can form or sometimes spasms. Smoking causes acute and chronic problems with ED. ED drugs, called PD 5 inhibitors, cause the production of nitric oxide in the body that allows the penis to engorge with blood. These drugs account for about a 65% success rate. Vacuum erection devices put negative pressure onto the penis, drawing blood into the penis and it works for about 80% of patients, but only about 30% are satisfied with this therapy. Injection therapy offers about an 80% success rate, however, pain associated with this option as well as scar tissue that forms makes it less desirable. Urethral suppositories, not used much, have only about a 23% success and satisfaction rate.

He then spoke about a new minimally invasive penile implant procedure that takes about 15 to 20 minutes and is done as an outpatient but offers a permanent solution for ED. Because of the reduced discomfort involved, he plans to do over 100 of these procedures this year. Penile implant offers a 93% satisfaction rate, oral medication is about 51% and injection therapy is about 40%. 92% of women would recommend a penile implant to another couple who is experiencing problems in their sexual life. He recommends that patients opt for a three piece implant instead of a one or two piece implant.

On July 26th, we will hear from Dr. Kelly Bewsey. Dr. Bewsey has spoken to our group a few times and always does a great job.

On September 27th, Steve Tompkins from Central DuPage Hospital Proton Center in Warrenville, Illinois will speak to our group about Proton Beam Therapy. There has always been much interest in our group about this treatment for cancer and this will be the first time we have had a representative from one of the nine proton centers currently treating.

Steve will speak at 7 pm so he can return to Warrenville (2 ½ hour drive) that evening.

Our meeting in November will be held on the 15

th in order to not interfere with anyone’s Thanksgiving plans.

If there are particular topics that you would like to see addressed, please contact us and we will do our best to make it happen.
