Dr. Kelly Bewsey was our speaker on July 26

th and he spent the evening answering the many questions that the audience had about prostate cancer treatment. He mentioned that although he is a surgeon, he realizes that there were many options open to a man for treatment of prostate cancer, and that the patient should make an informed decision about this very serious illness.

Dr. Bewsey had undergone gastric bypass surgery in December 2010 and, after asked, he shared that he had lost 150 pounds and felt better than he had for years. We wish him well as he continues on this road to fitness.

The meeting this month will feature Mr. Keith Turner who is with the Central Dupage Hospital Proton Center in Warrenville, Il. CDH Proton Center is the nearest proton center to the Peoria area and is the newest one, having opened its doors in October 2010. Proton Beam Therapy (PBT) has been used since 1954 and centers have treated over 45 different types of cancer, including breast cancer. Because of the precise placement of the beam, it is very much in demand for treating brain tumors in children rather than bombard them with conventional radiation that tends to scatter, thus damaging healthy tissue and therefore, IQ. At nearly every one of our meetings, the question about Proton Beam Therapy comes up and it will be a real pleasure to have someone from one of the nine proton centers with us to explain just what PBT is all about. Five of our members are recipients of PBT and they all have shared their positive experience with this treatment. Two of our members are currently being treated at CDH in Warrenville.

Mr. Turner will begin speaking at 7pm

as he has a 2 ½ hour drive back to Warrenville that evening.

Our meeting in November will be held on the 15

th in order to not interfere with anyone’s Thanksgiving plans. The speaker has yet to be finalized, but the website (www.ustoopeoria.com) will post information about this as soon as it becomes available. Those on the email list will get information delivered via their email.

You’ll want to mark this date on your planner in order to take advantage of the helpful information that we have worked hard to provide for our group. If there are particular topics that you would like to hear addressed, please contact us and we will do our best to make it happen.
