Sharon Windsor, registered dietitian at the Cancer Center for Healthy Living, spoke to our group about nutrition concerning prostate cancer. She highlighted recommendations from a study done by The World Cancer Research Fund and The American Institute for Cancer Research. Their report’s first recommendation was that a person should strive to be as lean as possible within the normal range of body weight. Rec. #2, be physically active as part of everyday life. Rec. #3, limit consumption of energy-dense foods. Avoid sugary drinks. Rec. #4, eat mostly foods of plant origin. Rec. #5, limit intake of red meat and avoid processed meat. Rec. #6, limit alcoholic drinks, women-< 1 beverage/day, 1 beer, 4oz. wine, men-2 beverages/day. Rec. #7, limit consumption of salt. Avoid moldy cereals (grains) or pulses (legumes). 1500mg/day is a safe level of sodium. Rec. #8, aim to meet nutritional needs through diet alone.
Sharon shared a pamphlet with us about the health risks involved with grilling. Grilling causes “muscle meats” (red meat, poultry and fish) to produce cancer-causing compounds. These compounds, called, HCAs (heterocyclic amines), have been shown to cause tumors in animals and possibly increase the risk of cancers of the breast, colon, stomach and prostate in humans.
She left copies of her presentation and pamphlets for us to have in our library that is available at our meetings.
Sharon encouraged us to take advantage of the Cancer Center for Healthy Living’s online library where an individual can learn more about understanding cancer diagnosis and treatment. The website address is www.cchlpeoria.org.
